Common Causes of Heel Pain

Your feet are complex structures that can support and balance your entire body weight and over time some of the parts can begin to falter and you may experience discomfort and pain. A thick ligament that stretches over the bottom of your foot, called the plantar fascia, acts as a sort of shock absorber and it is this part of the foot that often becomes damaged and is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Heel pain is often used in tandem with plantar fasciitis, but it's important to recognize that not all heel pain is caused by the condition, so if you are experiencing heel pain it's important to seek a diagnosis from your local podiatrist Dr. David Levitsky of Clinton Foot & Ankle Clinic in Clinton, Jonesville, and Saline, MI.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is characterized by pain at the bottom of your foot, or your arch, often near the heel. Pain related to plantar fasciitis is often worse upon waking in the morning or after sitting for long periods of time, and it can diminish as you walk around and stretch the ligament, but it inevitably returns. There may be other signs of inflammation, including redness, swelling, and heat.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis

Improper support is the most common cause of plantar fasciitis as it is what forces the most weight upon the plantar fascia and can cause damage to it. If you have issues with the arches of your feet you are more likely to develop the condition, but it can be further exacerbated by using improper footwear. Obesity and having a job where you are on your feet on hard flat surfaces for extended periods can put further strain on your feet.

Treatment for Heel Pain in Clinton, Jonesville, and Saline, MI

There are many ways your podiatrist can help treat heel pain and plantar fasciitis, namely by improving the way your feet are supported, either with custom-made orthotic devices or properly fitted shoes made especially for your needs. A night splint is a device you can wear to stretch out your plantar fascia as you sleep to prevent pain in the morning, and physical therapy may be recommended to further help. Surgery is only recommended if other more conservative approaches are not as successful.
